Commodore's View

Okay, I’ll be the first to admit that dates are NOT my strong point. I’ve recognized that for years, and have usually allowed for my lack of secure date knowledge. When I specify a date in conjunction with a weekend activity, I presume the weekend closest to the date, and adjust accordingly when the event approaches.

Unfortunately, last month I let one slip by. I was talking of the Change of Command Cruise around the fifth of December, meaning Friday night. It was called to my attention, and confirmed by playing with the G.P.S. that the Friday I referred to was in fact the fourth. With that in mind, reread the Windscoop article, and substitute the Fourth for the Fifth. Here’s looking forward to seeing you at the Change of Command when Racin’ Dave officially becomes Admiral Dave. If you miss it, it’s your loss.

If you do attend, you’ll be taking part in the Thirtieth Change of Command that the North Florida Cruising Club has held. That’s right, we’ve been around Thirty years this summer. The club was originally founded in August of 1968, and incorporated the next month. I guess that it’s appropriate, during this time of the approaching millennium, that we suffer our own calendar breakdown. At least it fits in with my problem with calendars.

So here is an appeal for suggestions. First, should the Thirtieth birthday be celebrated in August or September? Second, how should we celebrate? For anyone with a suggestion, my door is always open, seven days a week. After all, if I specified a date, the day would be wrong, so feel free to speak with me anytime. If you can’t find the phone number in this issue of the Windscoop, it’s in the Roster.

Speaking of which, I’d like to congratulate the Roster Committee for having put together another top-rate production. If you’ve not picked your’s up, come to the June Meeting and do so. While you’re there, you can hear about the time you missed on the Traditional St. Augustine Cruise. Or on the St. Augustine Race. If you can’t make the meeting, give Alison a call to work out details for getting your copy of the 1998 Roster.

If you wait too long to talk with Alison, you’ll get a recording. Seems like Fred and Alison will be taking off to the islands for a bit, but fear not, there will be someone to stand in for her in her enviable absence. Seems like more and more of you folks are getting to do more sailing in exotic places. Race Captain Bubba should be home by now after a race to Cuba with his Dad, aboard NIGYSOB. Ray Walshe has returned from his cruise. There’s even a listing for CRUISING in this years Roster in the listing BY DOCK.

It seems that there might be a future tradition that could be built. In about ten years, there’s evidently going to be a number of current members that will be off in the islands, living off the hook. I propose a future reunion rendezvous of NFCC members at a place to be announced, and a date to be determined. As long as I’m not the one to determine the date...
