ANOTHER VIEW

The time is growing closer for the Rear Commodore’s Cruise (Amity Anchorage, 8/25-26). If you haven’t made your reservations yet, hurry and do so, parking is becoming scarce, both in the parking lot, and the anchorage........ The party starts rolling about 1700 hours, and continues for days (possibly). Last month, I discussed how to get there, this month, I’ll review some other stuff. Bring your swimsuits, the pool is open, the patio provides a spectacular view of the sunset, and you’ll be able to imagine the view of the racers taking part in the Rear Commodore’s Race. Since it’s been a while since there’s been a Rear Commodore’s Race, let me review the rules (as they’re imposed this year).

First, there is NO entry fee. This may put trophies in jeopardy, but I’ll see what I can do with the budget. Second, there will be NO handicapping. This race is considered fun, and since we’re all going to pig out on dinner before, none of us will want to be trying to max-out the boat. Third, there will be NO protests (other than for lack of adult-beverages). Besides, protests complicate an otherwise pristine experience. Fourth, the course and final rules will be announced on the dock prior to the start. Amity has a tradition of FUN races, with no handicaps, and no protests, and long-continued friendship. If you want to have FUN racing, this is the place to be.

If shore-side events are more your style, there’ll be horseshoes, darts, the pool on the table, and the pool on the pool-deck. While you’re there, check out the display of trophies in the club house. There’s some good sailors at Amity, and most of their conversations generally start with "... I don’t really know what I’m doing, but...." When you hear those words, listen close and pay attention, whatever follows will be of note.

Prior to the race, there will be plenty of time to enjoy the fellowship, tall-tales, and good advice from everyone that will be in attendance. There will also be plenty of time to enjoy the repast to be offered: Roast Pork (eight hours in the smoker), BBQ Chicken, baked potato, Barbara’s famous salad complete with secret dressing, garlic bread, soft drinks, tea, and whatever beverages Barbara has on tap, and a spread of delectable deserts (courtesy of the covered desert ya’ll will bring).

The pork will be going on the smoker about ten in the morning, so it’ll be ready to serve about six in the evening. However you choose to attend, over the keel, or over the road, attend, and don’t forget the covered desert. It’ll be an evening to remember.....
