ANOTHER VIEW

Mark your calendar for the weekend of August 24th and 25th. That’ll be the weekend to cruise on down, either over the keel or behind the wheel, to Amity Anchorage for the Rear Commodore’s Cruise and Race.

To get there over the keel, from the Buckman Bridge (unlimited openings no need to call ahead to the bridge tender), head south, minding markers #11(green flasher) and #10(red flasher), they’ve been moved from your chart positions. There’s also a couple of new markers down there, #13(green daymark) and #15(green flasher). By the time you get #13 off your port beam, take up a southeasterly (more or less) heading and look along the shore, among the trees, from your bow to your port beam. Somewhere over there is a couple of rude yellow flashers that mark the output of a storm drain from further up Cunningham Creek. Just to the east of those, you’ll spot the uniquely hospitable Amity Anchorage. Grab a slip, or anchor out and dinghy in.

To navigate the land cruiser, from I-295, head south on San Jose, otherwise known as SR-13. Amity is about four and a half miles south of Julington Creek, on SR-13. It’s easy to tell when you cross over Julington Creek these days: the bridge construction that is going on. Drive slowly, and safely. About four and a half miles south of the congestion junction, there is a slightly faded blue sign for Amity Anchorage (CAPE DORY YACHTS) on the right. You’re there, but before you make that turn, you’ll find two drives separated by a line of trees. You want to take the north one (the first one you come to past the mailboxes). The south one goes back toward the river as well, but you can’t get to Amity on that one, and that means you’ll make the trip four times before it’s over.

And it won’t be over until it’s over. The plan is to arrive during the day on Saturday, and come hungry. The recipes have been handed down (or at least borrowed) for the legendary Roast Pork and Spinach Salad (with secret dressing) that Amity is famous for. Please remember that if you bring your own adult beverages (not by car), please keep and consume on your boats, as to bring hard liquor ashore will endanger Barbara’s business license. Just a friendly reminder. The Rear Commodore’s Race will take place that night, after dinner, starting about nine pm.

Sunday will provide Coffee, Donuts and a newspaper (remember how that’s specified), and then perhaps a dip in the pool before heading back. However you decide to attend, please do, and enjoy yourself as much as I have every time I’ve ever been at Amity Anchorage.
